Firefighters are battling a multialarm fire that has severely damaged a northern New Jersey apartment building. No injuries have been reported in the blaze that broke out around 5 p.m. at the Avalon on Russell Avenue in Edgewater. And authorities say it appears that everyone in the building was able to get out safely

Long-time Yankee announcer John Sterling was a resident of the building and told PIX11 he lost everything. The cause of the fire is not yet known. Witnesses say it was producing massive flames and large plumes of thick, black smoke that were visible across the Hudson River in New York City.
Fire departments from neighboring towns, as well as the FDNY, have been sent to assist the Edgewater Fire Department with the blaze. Numerous firefighters from Edgewater and surrounding towns were battling the blaze, but their efforts were being hampered by windy conditions and frigid temperatures.Authorities have cordoned off some streets around the burning building, but no major traffic problems were being reported.
